We Love You Betsy!

Please choose one of these songs as it is absolutely necessary for one of them to serve as background music before preceding.

Last night the Berkeley Poetry Slam‘s guiding force over the last couple of years stepped down from her official slam master duties. Betsy Gomez has worked tirelessly to promote, organize, and ensure that Bay Area poets have a weekly space to perform, create, and engage with one another. For a lot of us the Berkeley Poetry Slam is a home and Betsy’s commitment to providing us with one extends back to when the original founder of the show, Ekhabhumi Charles Ellik, was still the slam master. She has watched a lot of us grow and become better artists. She’s been there to cheer us on, she’s been there as a friend, she’s fed us, shared drinks with us– she is one of us, happy to see us shine while doing all of the necessary and important work that rarely shines the spotlight on her.

Thank you so much, Betsy, for everything you have done. We love you. We’re excited to see what’s to come. You’re always family and please let us know how we can support you as you have always been there to support us.

Bios:

“Mighty” Mike McGee is a well-traveled funny hobo-poet from San Jose, California. He has been a force in Bay Area spoken word since 1999. His reach expanded internationally after winning the 2003 National Poetry Slam Grand Championship. McGee soon after embarked on an international poetry and comedy tour, which has taken him to venues and festivals all over Europe, Canada and the U.S. He has since become a favorite performer to many schools around the U.S. and was one of the first Americans to perform at the University of Paris (La Sorbonne) and Glastonbury, the largest music festival in the world. McGee travels roughly 100,000 miles a year to make people laugh, think and cry with his brand of “stand-up poetry.”
McGee is a co-founder of the live spoken word groups Tons of Fun University (TOFU), The Whirlwind Company and Electric Whale/Junkyard Ghost Revivals.
Mike has a mighty appetite, an uncanny relationship with ladybugs, several tattoos and siblings, and a passable Scottish accent. He breathes somewhere between Silicon Valley, California and Vancouver, B.C. as often as possible. Mike thoroughly enjoys weather, beverages, the number 3, and the scent of mock orange blossoms in the spring. Welcome back. Live love. Feel free.

Color Me Black

Color Me Black

If you didn’t know, one of our organizers, Dre aka Duke Bossman, has been in the rap game for a minute and has had songs featured on a bunch of TV shows and movies like Cabin in the Woods, Necessary Roughness, Entourage, and there was even a Budweiser commercial during the Superbowl. He has a new project out that’s now available on iTunes and Amazon that features his High Decibels partner, Chief, G Battles, champion beat boxer and Tourettes Without Regrets regular: Syzygy, the coach of the 2013 Berkeley slam team: Naz, and there’s even cameos by Berkeley slam favorites, Jelal and G Yamazawa. And it’s a great CD. You should add it to your collection.
