Get to know our spotlight feature JAMES CHURCH

San Francisco native and current Texas A&M Aggie, James Church, has been making a lot of noise in the land of agricultural education and Johnny Football. We look forward to seeing what he brings to the stage Wednesday night.

Last year he filmed this mini-documentary at the Starry Plough. It’s a moving account of a very tragic event in his life and the means by which we use poetry as a way to begin healing.

Last Wednesday the Berkeley Poetry Slam kicked off 2014 into high gear, and it was something special. We’re looking to keep the good energy going this week as we are featuring Santa Cruz’s resident poetic powerhouse, Queen Jasmeen!

We’ll also have a special Spotlight Feature set from a native of San Francisco’s Mission district and one of the hottest young poets running around Texas (literally and figuratively, because Texas is friggin’ hot), James Church.

And this month we are on the ROAD TO WOWPS so all female-identified poets will get priority on our sign up list to accumulate points for our WOWPS finals at the end of the month.

Sign ups for the slam start at 7:30. The season is in full swing so earn you way to compete for a spot to represent Berkeley at the National Poetry Slam in Oakland in 2014.

Your host for the night will be Toaster, with musical accompaniment by Three Blind Mice

Bio:

Jasmine Schlafke is a poet, activist and mother from Santa Cruz, CA dedicated to expression and art. She earned her spot on a National poetry team for the last three years and is teaching slam in alternative high school settings, weekly. In her free time Jasmine volunteers for a mental health network and remains committed to mental health activism and liberation.

My name is James Church, a.k.a Heart, and I was raised in the jungle of my grandfather’s backyard within the Mission District of San Francisco, California. I was born half-Hispanic, half-sidewalk and would talk to anything that pretended to listen. I moved to College Station, Texas during the summer of 2010. I began reading my past aloud to the ears of audience members for a non-profit organization called Mic Check, which I’m the Writing Director for, and I haven’t stopped since. I am an English Major at Texas A&M University. I have an affinity for day old cheese pizza, comics, and losing bets. If you see me talking to myself, don’t be wary, I’m just attempting to transcribe everything the light touches into poetry.

1/8 Spotlight Feature GRETCHEN CARVAJAL

We have an exciting spotlight feature this Wednesday in Gretchen Carvajal. She has been making a huge impact in the youth slam scene in the Bay Area, but this year moved to the midwest to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We’re looking forward to hear her read and check out this video to get a sneak preview of what she’s about to bring to the mic!

She’ll also be raising relief funds for the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Philippines through sales of her new chapbook, “Daughter of the Sun”. Please support because help is still needed in the region.

Welcome to the new year, everybody! We hope you had a happy and safe holiday. Next Wednesday the Berkeley Slam returns from a two week hiatus, and we are coming back strong as we welcome IWPS finalist, Cave Canem fellow, and recent transplant from the midwest, Danez Smith, to the Bay Area. We are very fortunate to have him living here and this will be a great opportunity to get a good look as to why so many of us are excited to have him join the community of poets in the Bay.

We’ll also have a special Spotlight Feature set from Youth Speaks alum and current member of the University of Madison’s First Wave program, Gretchen Carvajal. She’ll be raising funds for Typhoon Haiyan relief through sales of her new chapbook, “Daughter of the Sun”.

Bio:

Danez Smith, a Cave Canem Fellow and 2-time Pushcart Nominee, works in Madison, WI, as an Student Advisor for the First Wave Program at UW-Madison. He likes tattoos, bad food, drinking Capri Suns, reading manga and good poems. His work appears or is forthcoming in PANK, Vinyl, Radius, Southern Indiana Review, and other places. He slams sometimes, placing 6th in the world at the 2011 Individual World Poetry Slam. His One-Man Theatre Production “For Those Who Pray In Closets” is receiving critical acclaim and standing ovations wherever performed. Danez has travelled across the country and the globe to Mexico, Panama, Switzerland, and England to perform poetry and theatre. A young artist walking and writing in the footsteps of Baldwin and Hughes, Danez seeks to continue to be a voice for hushed choir boys, the walking shadows, the joy, hurt, and journey of the black, queer men. Pulling from his artistic endeavors in music and theatre, his voice on the page sings of his old soul, his experienced youth, his treasured mistakes, and all the things that imagine him human.
